D.H. Lawrence Heritage Durban House Heritage Centre, Mansfield Road, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, NG16 3DZ Tel: (01773) 717353

D. H. Lawrence Heritage, in Eastwood, has launched a fun children's trail around its two attractions the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace Museum and Durban House Heritage Centre.

This Family Friendly activity leads children around a range of fun tasks with the help of Bert, a cartoon representation of the writer D.H. Lawrence as a boy.

There is plenty to keep children, and adults a-like, entertained including:

  • Spotting mysterious items that would have been used by a Victorian family.
  • Amuse themselves with a fun crossword, word search, colouring-in or become an artist in the Watercolours Room!
  • Have a go at doing our laundry in the washhouse, or try their hand at some Victorian games?
  • Experience life in a Victorian classroom and dress up as a Victorian pupil
  • See what it was like to do the shopping one hundred years ago
  • Crawl through a tunnel and imagine what it would be like in a coalmine!

The best feature is the space theatre where you get a 360 degree view of an amazing show. Worth going just for that! New walk museum’s fantastic! Café’s not brilliant, but the museum’s great – dinosour skeletons, a big earth / space gallery which is great, an egyptology thing, and a great pre-schoolers section which is very big. Well worth a visit.

Fun pull out feely drawers with different materials and objects from nature, along the theme of 'Every Object Tells a Story'. A Noah's Ark with flaps to lift to find animal objects and noises to listen to. More pull out drawers and brass rubbings, along with dressing up clothes from different cultures.

Nottingham Castle Museum
In the gallery there is an Art Point with books to help adults discuss art with children, colouring activities and trails to follow looking for animals in the paintings.

The best place for little ones inside is The Enchanted Forest, a room with paintings specially selected to interest children, with toys, dress up clothes and a 'forest' to help children learn about the art or just to play with.

"Take a trip to Nottingham Castle to the Enchanted Forest - indoors for under 5's.  Dress up in the regal costumes and play with the soft animals and why not have a tea party with the cups and saucers.  Great day out for the family, great indoor cafe and excellent views of the city.  Best of all its FREE to all Nottingham residents (Just take something to prove your address etc.. ie.  Fuel bill)"

There are lifts to all floors of the museum, although they are rather small. The surrounding park is great too, with a modest but fun wooden play area. There are toilets with baby changing facilities and the cafe is great for a rest and a quick drink or bite to eat. There are often special events at the castle so check out our 'What's on section'.
