Worthing Beach

This beach has a low-key feel to it and is lovely at any time. It's a stony, pebbly beach but when the tied is out it's fine for sand castles and digging or crab spotting among the many shallow pools. Hours of playing, creating, exploring and paddling.

The Lido offers fun fair type rides, two cafes, beach shops and an ice cream kiosk. Walk down the beach or along the promenade to Splash point and have an ice cream and play on the beach or in the grassy area just beyond the beach shops. Worthing beach is an absolute gem for families with little ones.

Worthing Lido

Fancy a tea, coffee or ice cream whilst your little ones have a go on the roundabout or the bouncy slide? There are tables and chairs dotted around these low-key attractions, perfect for a cheap 'fun' fix right off the beach.

Toilets are available to the side of the Lido.

Worthing Pier

A magical place for little ones! The size is overwhelming and the height from the water is both fascinating and incredible. Kids love walking around it peering out to sea, down at the water or watching the fishermen pull in their catch. Lots of benches for resting, snacking and breastfeeding! There is an amusement room which is more suited to older kids. Check out the Lido for attractions geared for younger children.

The Pavilion located on the pier is a terrific venue for children's theatre and musical productions and there are toilet facilities and ice cream kiosks and beach shops.

Eco Garden Beach (between Worthing beach and Goring beach)

This unique and fun eco garden, situated right on the beach, is designed to demonstrate how to create a water-saving garden and to encourage the conservation of water. It's on a lovely stretch of beach with the sailing club just a short walk away. The garden also has benches and wooden sculptures and sometimes there is an ice cream van on the road.

Located just past Grand Avenue (from Worthing town centre) with parking on the road. Is only about a 15 mintue walk down the beach from the Pavilion.

Lancing Green Beach

"Clean and safe. Shingle at high tide. Long flat sands at low tide with no rocks. Parking by the Green (only £1 a day)  Public conveniences on the Green. Small cafe for chips, coffee, ice-creams and buckets and spades. New building for a cafe/restaurant being built very slowly (and quietly!) next to the cafe. Beach huts run to the east along the cycle path that takes you to Shoreham.

On a sunny day you can see along the coast to the west to Worthing pier and to the east to Shoreham Harbour arm and further to the cliffs of Beachy Head. At high tide the beach is good for swimming and body-boarding, low tide is good for paddling, sand drawings and castles and, as it is so flat, shrimping, if you have a shrimping net.

The beach is used by many kite surfers when the wind is right but they have a designated area so it is safe for other users. Brilliant to watch 20+ kite sails skimming by. I have been using this beach for 21 years with children of varying ages and I love it still."

Goring Beach

The bit down by Marine Drive, fun beach with picturesque beach huts and lots of kite surfers to watch. Great for crab shell hunting! Further past the rocks the beach gets more private, in that there is a green bit between the beach and the road so makes it feel more secluded. There is also a green grassy space useful for ball games and picnics.

The cafe on the beach front is good during the day, if it's nice weather, there are table and chairs out front. Inside the cafe is cramped and no good at all for pushchairs. Also, they stop serving food early on so no good for after school play and tea time.

There are toilets downstairs, around the back of the cafe but no baby changing facilities.

From Worthing, drive along the seafront and there is free parking on the left just before you get to the cafe car park.

Littlehampton Beach

This beach has a touristy and beachy feel to it in the summer. Very crowded and lots of seaside amenities like fish n chips, BBQ type food, beach shops and toilets. There is also an outdoor shower facility. You can go on a boat trip from this beach and there is always a duty watchman in the tower during the summer months who often makes announcements over the loudspeaker, giving the beach a holiday atmosphere.

Littlehampton Beach, sandy beach

Just in front of the tower the beach is sandy and fab for playing and swimming. There is also a large fun park just behind the sea front and lots of open grassy areas for ball games and picnics and kite flying. There is a playground area as well. Parking is pay and display.

East Beach, Littlehampton Beach

The Eastern part of Littlehampton beach is also sandy but a bit more low-key with less seaside type amenities. It does have a rather trendy cafe which gives this beach area a more refined atmosphere. The cafe quite cleverly suggests a piece of driftwood washed up on the stones and has obtained national recognition. It's child-friendly in that the windows open up concertina style so feels spacious and easy for pushchairs.

The playground area is just behind the cafe and there's a car park (pay and display) also.

West Beach at Littlehampton

With sand dunes and vegetated shingle, this beach is a treasure for little explorers. West beach is the last stop on the 'Look & Sea!' visitor centre's nature trail. This is a terrific beach for spotting whelk shell and egg cases, cuttlebones, oyster and mussel shells along the tideline.

'Look & Sea!' visitor centre is on Surrey street in Littlehampton, just along the river Arun.

Located off the A286 (accessible from the A27, south side of Chichester), at the small roundabout in Birdham village take the right fork brown signposted West Wittering Beach. Follow the brown tourist signs to the car park.

Widewater beach, Shoreham

"Beautiful beach, always clean, sandy at low tide, small cafe which sells a few toys and ice cream etc. clean toilets and a walk and cycle path to Worthing."

Located just inland from Shoreham beach, Widewater beach is a pebbly beach with both fresh and salt water. The lagoon attracts swans and other types of birds and has interesting plant life. Great for spotting unusual fish and plants.

Felpham beach, Felpham (nr Bognor Regis)

"The beach is a combination of pebbles and sand like most the west Sussex beaches except that it has some excellent rock pools. These rock pools are abundant with crabs, shrimp and small fish ect.

There is medium size café and shop selling beach paraphernalia so don't worry if you forget your bucket and spade. There is a large toilet block conveniently located just off the main beach.

Felpham beach tends to attract more locals that tourist as it located behind the village. Parking can be tricky in the height of summer but you can park either in the side roads or there is a large car park in the village."

Ferring beach, Ferring

Located just beyond Goring, Ferring beach is a pebbly beach set back from the road, so very quiet. Ideal for rock-pooling at low tide and swimming at high tide. Very pretty and feels more secluded than Goring or Worthing beach.

Ferring Beach

The Blue Bird Cafe is nearby and has toilets and a children's menu. A bit tight for pushchairs but there is also seating outside. There is also a toilet block outside behind the cafe.

"I love this beach, every time I'm here, it feels like I'm on holiday! And then I can go back to my home in Worthing - it's the best."

Climping beach, Climping, nr Littlehampton

This is a quiet beach with shallow waters at low tide. Perfect for little ones to splash and play.

Leave the A27 at the A284 turnoff, then head south towards Lyminster. As you enter Littlehampton, turn right onto the A259 towards Bognor Regis. Keep along here until you cross the river, and then cross the next roundabout (Climping). Turn left into Climping Street (signposted ‘Climping Beach and The Sea’) and follow this down to the beach. There is parking (pay but is cheap).

"Feels secluded and in the countryside rather than just off the main road. Kiosk with drinks and ice cream, toilets, parking and open green space for ball and frisbee. Lovely!"
